Overview

Please join the Private Directors Association's Atlanta chapter for an in person event during which our panel of experts will discuss the board's role in planning for CEO succession. We will discuss overseeing the CEO evaluation process, monitoring the CEO succession process, selecting and onboarding a new CEO, and overcoming challenges associated with CEO succession planning.

Justin Jordan
President and Chief Operating Officer
Essential Ingredients

Born in South Carolina, Justin L. Jordan graduated from The Citadel in 1985 with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. Justin serves as President and Chief Operating Officer for Essential Ingredients. Prior to joining Essential Ingredients, Justin served in Director level roles in Human Resources at BellSouth responsible for HR functions and their Information Systems. He was certified as a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) by the Society of Human Resource Management and completed the Advanced HR Executive program from the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan. During the first five years of his career, he worked in software development at BellSouth and Management Science America. Justin serves on the board of directors for his company and has also served as an independent director for Packard Distribution until it was sold in early 2021. Justin has been married to Elizabeth Martin Jordan since 1989 and they have four children: Rebecca, Hannah, Will and Sarah Kate. His hobbies include hiking, running, and reading. 

 

Cindy Baerman

Cindy Baerman is a Board Member and Seasoned P&L Leader with C-Suite experience. She currently serves as a board member at Epi Breads and FPL Food LLC. As CEO of Executive Advisory Services, she serves in an advisor to several CEO’s in the arena’s Sales Force Effectiveness, Organization Design post-merger, CEO Succession and Total Rewards Strategy in a High Growth Private Industries including Healthcare IT and a Large 39 Billion Dollar Public Transportation Company. Previously, Mrs. Baerman was the Chief Human Resources Officer at Graphic Packaging International from 2009 to 2013. Prior to this, she was the Vice President and General Manager of the Food and Beverage Division in North America for Diversey from 2005 to 2008; and the CHRO at Stericycle. Mrs. Baerman received her B.S. in Management from Purdue University and her M.S. in Management from Maryville University. She also attended Board of Directors College at Stanford University.

 

Joseph Astrachan

Joe Astrachan is Professor Emeritus and past executive director of the Cox Family Enterprise Center at the Coles College of Business, Kennesaw State University near Atlanta, Georgia, USA. He is also an Affiliated Professor with the Centre for Family Entrepreneurship and Ownership Affiliated Professor at Jönköping International Business School (Sweden), Family Business Scholar with the Smith Family Business Initiative at Cornell University, and a visiting scholar at Witten/Herdecke University (Germany).

Dr. Astrachan has received numerous awards for his research and service from family business, entrepreneurship, management, and research-oriented associations including awards form the Family Firm Institute, the International Family Enterprise Research Academy, andthe Family Business Network International. In 2018 he was named one of the top 25 leading scholars in entrepreneurship in a Journal of Small Business Management article. He is author or coauthor of more than 25 book chapters, 65 scientific publications, and ten books. He is a frequent speaker on the topic having given more than 300 speeches around the globe.  Dr. Astrachan is founder and former editor of the scientific publication the Journal of Family Business Strategy, and past and longest serving editor of Family Business Review.

Dr. Astrachan has 40 years’ experience studying and working with family companies and has spoken in over 35 countries. He has served on a total of 19 boards of privately-owned family businesses (currently serving on nine) globally (operations in USA, Africa, Europe, Eastern Europe and Asia) in a variety of industries including: heavy equipment, automotive, high-tech (software and service), restaurants, building materials, food manufacturing, hospitality, retailing and distribution, commercial and multifamily real estate, and healthcare.  Dr. Astrachan comes from a family business background (container and tanker shipping, coal mining and pharmaceuticals). Dr. Astrachan earned his B.A., M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D. degrees at Yale University.

 

Ty Johnson

Ty is a strategic, data driven, and results oriented business executive. He has an innate ability to dive into an issue or opportunity and quickly develop a strategic well thought out plan of attack. He researches, plans, and then executes with a drive to the line and a commitment to excellence. Ty is a natural leader and a great coach - encouraging his team to challenge themselves while simultaneously mentoring and developing them along the way. Ty is well-respected by virtue of his ability to leverage his vast enterprise experience and expertise – sales, finance, marketing, and operations – to progress a company and his team.

Ty is an Operating Partner at Trive Capital. Trive Capital is a Dallas TX, based private equity firm that manages nearly $2B in aggregated capital commitments. Ty works closely with the CEO’s and leadership teams of various portfolio companies on value enhancement initiatives. Ty also works to identify and evaluate new deal opportunities on behalf of Trive Capital.

From 2017 to 2020, Ty served as CEO and Director of Select Interior Concepts (SIC), a publicly traded leading provider of interior surface products for residential and commercial applications. As CEO, of the newly formed holding company, he combined two privately held business units and took the new platform public within nine months of company formation. During his tenure, Ty presided over significant growth of the company resulting in above market sales and profitability levels.

Prior to joining SIC, Ty served as CEO of Residential Design Services (RDS), a SIC subsidiary, since December 2015 where he drove organic growth initiatives including new product development and cross selling activities. Prior to joining RDS, Ty was Vice President & General Manager Consumer Products and in July 2015 was named President, North America of OmniMax International, Inc, a roofing product manufacturing company. As President, Ty oversaw a $600M division where he was responsible for 30 plant locations and 1,000 employees. Prior to OmniMax, he was Senior Vice President of Mannington Mills, Inc., a flooring product manufacturing company and President, North America for the predecessor company Amtico International Inc., which was PE backed and purchased by Mannington. Ty spent several years in executive roles at Armstrong Flooring and the early part of his career in roles of increasing responsibility at GE Capital.

Ty holds a Master of Business Administration degree from DePaul University and a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Howard University. He serves on several non-profit boards including the Woodruff Arts Center and Leadership Council of Junior Achievements of Georgia.
