Overview
Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (“DEI”) is a function in many organizations that serve companies and their boards of directors. What type of direction and guidance is given to company management and boards by these organizations on implementing DEI? This expert panel will look at challenges, learnings and outcomes and will share best practices in authentically implementing DEI in Board recruitment, retention, operations and education. The panelists represent leadership and DEI professionals at major organizations serving companies, boards and academia.

Alan was named to his current position with the Private Directors Association in January of 2021. Previously he was the founder and President of the Houston Chapter of the organization.
Alan served as the CEO of ProQuest Company, a publicly traded technology company, and as CFO for both Bell+Howell Company and for Tribune Publishing Company. He founded the Education and New Media division of Tribune Company and led it until it’s sale to McGraw Hill.
He has served on over a dozen boards including public companies, private companies, venture backed early stage companies and not-for- profit organizations.
Alan received an undergraduate degree in commerce and accounting from DePaul University and a master’s degree in management from Northwestern University Kellogg Graduate School of Management.

Beverly is an independent board member of a public and private venture companies and on the board of NACD and PAD and EAC of Federal Reserve, SF, Former State Commissioner and State Insurance Advisor. As a real estate professional, she has had several senior level real estate positions, with one of her projects receiving ULI recognition. She was an executive in corporate America and was an investment banker on Wall Street. She held senior level positions as a Federal Regulator where she managed workouts during the last recession and as portfolio executive with the SBA, where she turned around failed portfolio companies. Ms. Cole once owned one of the largest women owned fast food restaurant chains in Southern Florida, multi-family commercial property and LITC property owner.
Beverly went to Boston University, received a JD from Fordham University, a MBA from the Wharton School and was chosen to attend the prestigious invitational only The Renaissance Weekend. Ms. Cole is actively looking for board positions.

Cornelia Cheng Managing Director, Investments Brightwood Capital Advisors, LLC

Cornelia is a Managing Director on the Investments Team of direct lending fund Brightwood Capital Advisers. Brightwood has invested over $4 billion in middle-market companies across five industries: Business Services, Healthcare Services, Tech/Media/Telecom, Franchising and Transportation & Logistics. Cornelia is based in Los Angeles and focuses on providing debt and minority equity in non-sponsored and sponsored deals across the US western region. Cornelia previously held roles with Prudential Private Capital, CIBC World Markets and First Interstate Bank.
Cornelia is a Board Director of LTC Properties, Inc. (NYSE: LTC) and chairs its Diversity and ESG Committee. She is a Board Director of ACG Los Angeles and chairs its Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee. Cornelia also co-chairs the ACG Global DEI Task Force. She is a former Board of Trustee of the Archer School for Girls and a former Board Director of the Los Angeles Junior Chamber of Commerce. Heather Caruso is a faculty member and assistant dean at the UCLA Anderson School of Management, with a passion for helping people to grow, inspire, and work effectively together. Fascinated by years of observing workplace dynamics as a Silicon Valley engineer and executive, Heather launched her career as an academic with an A.M. in Social Psychology and a Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior - Social Psychology, both at Harvard. Layering rigorous academic training on top of practical experience, Heather’s interests ultimately grounded themselves in leadership priorities: facilitating equity and inclusion; collaboration in diverse teams; managing identity, power, and influence; and strategies for optimal choice, judgment, decision making. After pursuing these interests in over a decade of teaching, research administration, and scholarship at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, Heather moved to UCLA Anderson to enrich and expand her work.
