Event Overview

In this session, we address that question that’s top of mind with leaders and board directors: What have I gotten myself into? Our panel and audience will explore the risks associated with AI. Key issues to consider when conducting any AI initiative will be examined. Topics include avoiding so-called Black Box AI problems by focusing on explainability and transparency in a company’s AI practices, establishing an ethical AI philosophy in the organization through the use of FATE (Fairness, Accountability, Transparency, and Ethics in AI) principles, and managing stakeholder trust in AI through communication. We will discuss the confusing landscapes of content ownership, data privacy, and ethics in applying AI to business opportunities and challenges. Our panelists will share perspectives on how leaders and board directors can stay informed and engaged with the rapid changes in artificial intelligence, including deploying board-level AI governance into their companies.

Panelists

Ms. Jezierski is a compliance expert and former compliance executive with 25 years of government and private sector experience, including time as associate general counsel, assistant secretary for the US Chamber of Commerce, senior vice president for Global Ethics at Walmart, a partner with the global law firm Baker McKenzie and as chief counsel for Oversight and Investigations with the Judiciary Committee of the US House of Representatives. 

She assists organizations with the design and implementation of global compliance programs; remediation during government enforcement actions; risk assessments; compliance program operations, management, and oversight; compliance training; and conducting internal investigations. She was most recently with the US Chamber of Commerce where she advised on legal and compliance risks including Board of Directors and organizational governance; federal, state, and local campaign finance and lobbying; data privacy; and congressional oversight. 

While with Walmart, Ms. Jezierski was the global lead for the vision, strategy, implementation, and execution of Walmart’s ethics program. Under her tenure, she set and maintained the company’s standards of ethical conduct and its processes for identifying conduct that violated its Statement of Ethics. She was also responsible for the governance and processes for Walmart’s response, review, substantiation, and related discipline, for allegations received by its ethics helpline and enhancing Walmart’s compliance program, based on gaps or weaknesses identified from ethics investigations. She was also responsible for the company’s Conflicts of Interest program and ethics program reporting to executive and board leadership. 

In private practice, Ms. Jezierski worked with global companies to conduct FCPA compliance risk assessments and to design and implement FCPA compliance programs. She successfully defended several compliance programs before the DOJ and SEC resulting in reduced FCPA related penalties or the decline of FCPA enforcement actions. This included advising on compliance standards and controls, training, communications, and program oversight, as well as testing the effectiveness of their compliance program, and advising on how to respond to compliance failures and misconduct reports.

Additionally, Ms. Jezierski was a deputy assistant attorney general for Legislative Affairs at the US Department of Justice. In her public sector roles, she provided strategic advice to top Justice Department officials and leading US Congress members on federal law enforcement priorities, congressional oversight of the Justice Department and other federal law enforcement agencies, and congressional investigations. Ms. Jezierski is a graduate of the College of William and Mary School of Law and Denison University and is a member of the District of Columbia Bar.

Lyle focuses his practice in the area of intellectual property, government procurement and artificial intelligence. He provides end-to-end counsel to help clients identify, protect, and commercialize IP assets, working closely with clients in a cross-collaborative manner with the firm’s practice groups and consulting and lobbying arms to meet business goals. Lyle is also part of the Michael Best AI Center of Excellence, providing leading-edge guidance for clients developing or implementing AI policies or solutions. Lyle is also a member of the firm’s Unmanned Technology team, the Defense & National Security group, and often works alongside the Best Autonomous Insights group.

Mike, a visionary technology commercialization and growth-stage operations expert, helps CEOs, owners, and investors of $5-50M companies drive growth and increase margins through improved systems, data and AI capabilities, and digital strategies. With over 20 years of experience, Mike has successfully launched and grown enterprise software divisions, led turnarounds, overseen multiple exits, and secured capital commitments of $50M+. He has served as CEO and COO in various industries, driving innovation and reducing development cycles. Holding a Ph.D. from George Washington University, an M.B.A. from Penn State, and a B.S. from MIT, Mike has taught entrepreneurship and innovation at several East Coast universities. Based in Research Triangle, North Carolina, he is dedicated to helping leaders navigate the challenges of managing computational, AI, and digital capabilities in turbulent market environments, creating value and driving growth for their businesses.

Moderator

Maudelyn Greene is a Senior Vice President and Senior Relationship Manager with Bank of America’s Global Commercial Banking team in Charlotte, where she provides consultative financial advice and comprehensive solutions to middle market companies in varying phases of their business life cycle. She is a curious and collaborative problem-solver, and uses these abilities to drive business development and create long-lasting client partnerships.

Maudelyn has held a number of financial and operational roles during her 17-year career at Bank of America. Maudelyn joined Bank of America in 2006 as an analyst in the Global Treasury Solutions division where she worked on process design and business improvement. She also spent time with the Client Delivery and Service team, where she
helped the business to identify, mitigate, and monitor risks. Prior to her current role, she was a Business Controls Manager with the Global Commercial Banking team where she partnered with the business to drive operational efficiencies and execute strategic initiatives.

Maudelyn is a leader in BofA’s inclusion initiatives and serves as the co-chair of the Black Professional Group’s Enterprise Finance committee and a BofA Community volunteer leader. She’s served on the board of directors for Raise a Child of the Carolinas and Dahlia Grove, and co-leads a grant-making committee for the Womens Impact Fund. Maudelyn earned a Bachelors degree in Management Information Systems from Virginia Tech and Masters in Management from the University of Maryland.
